Numb chapter 8"Mimi, let's go out and play!"
"Yeah, coming Den!"
Two young girls, seven years of age, ran across their spacious front lawn. "Don't go off too far!" their mother called. "And come back in time for dinner!"
"Okay, mom!" the twins chorused.
"Come on, race you to the tree!" Mimi cried. "Betcha can't catch me!"
"In your crazy dreams, sis!"
Cadence and Mimi Hower raced across the lawn, reaching the tree simultaneously. Mimi started climbing up, when Cadence called, "Wait, let's go out back and play in the treehouse!"
"Yeah!" Mimi agreed, jumping back down. They ran out back.
The treehouse was more like a "treemansion", having three stories, a slide, and more. Using the pulley-system elevator, the girls rode up into the gameroom.
"What to play with today?" Mimi mused aloud.
"We've played with the Digimon stuff a lot, so that's out..." Cadence continued. "Hmm..."
Mimi grinned, picking up a handheld device. "Megaman?"
Cadence gasped. "Perfect!"
They each hooked up a device to the TV screen an
Numb chapter 7The next day, I got called to Commander Daniele's office.
Shaking, I dressed in full military outfit, fearing the worst. As I walked down the hallway, I noticed everyone grew quiet as I passed by. Some people even saluted me. I was utterly stumped - not 24 hours ago, they'd all looked down on me like I was nothing. Now it was like I was their superior.
I reached the office and knocked on the door. C. Daniele said, "Enter." I walked inside.
"You wanted to see me, sir?" I said bravely, saluting him.
"You've been promoted to Corporal," he said briskly. "In two weeks time, we will invade the Atlanta wood Pokéuman base. You will prepare a small incursion group for the incoming assault. That is all."
"Sir, yes, sir!" I cried before scrambling out of the room.
All day, I gave tests to every soldier in the base. Barely any passed. By the day's end, I'd whittled it down to twenty soldiers - Ian and Karmen included. I told everyone to head to dinner and meet back after breakfast.
As I went
Numb chapter 6The next morning was the day of the rescue.
I geared up quickly, took my pill, and turned to Cadence.
"You're gonna want to stay here for this, sis," I told her. "I don't want you getting caught in the Pokéuman base."
Cadence nodded. "Good luck, Mimi."
I smiled a bit, hugged her, and headed to the gunroom to get equipped.
"Alright, men!" Dad shouted as the soldiers going on the mission gathered in the gunroom. "We are minutes away from the start of the mission! I need you to do better than your best, and follow all commands!"
"Sir yes sir!" we replied. Dad walked over to me.
"This is your temporary commander on this mission. Her name is Melody. You will address her as Commander on this mission, and follow her orders!"
The soldiers groaned. "We have to follow around a little kid?"
"Listen up, punks!" I snapped. "I've been here two weeks and I can tell I'm way better at shooting, aiming, and all the other junk, than you are! I don't wanna hear one stinkin' complaint or you're gonna
Numb chapter 5On the last day of Ian's training, I was headed to the training room when Sergeant Hower stopped me.
"You're coming with me today, Private," he said. "Bring the Po...Cadence."
Stunned, not only that he wanted to see me, but that he'd called Cadence by her name, I whistled sharply. Cadence flew over, and we followed the Sergeant to his office.
As he sat behind his desk, I stood at attention in front of it. "At ease," he said gently. "Sit down." Confused, I did. "I have something I must tell you, Private."
"You...you will find this extremely hard to believe...perhaps you will never come to terms with it."
"I'll do my best to understand, sir."
"You.....are a Pokéuman."
I stared at him. "What?"
"Blast it, that's not what I was going to say!" He looked older, suddenly - weaker. I resisted the urge to reach over and hug him. "You're not a Pokéuman, you're.....you're..."
"I'm what, sir?"
"....You are....my daughter."
My knees buckled. "Wh-what?" I squeaked out. I
Numb chapter 4"So, who's Sam?"
"Haha, Sam's my baby sister. She's nine. Her full name's Samantha, but everyone calls her Sam or Sami. She's a real pain in the you-know-what, lemme tell ya!"
"Nice....and Nik? Who's that, little brother?"
"Nah, Nik is Nikki. Her real name is Nicole, but, we all call her Nik or Nikki. What she grew up with and all. She's going off to college this fall. Oh - our mom wanted to name her Tiffany!!"
We both laughed, then after we'd calmed down, I continued. "Anyway, our mom gave us names with easy nicknames that we could use. I've got..lessee, the normal 'Mel', then there's 'Mel-Mel', and...oh, lately, my friends've started calling me 'Melly'. But aaaanyway, we've all got names that we can use when we're adults if we don't want the nicknames."
"Sounds like you've got a smart mom," Karmen commented.
"Yeah, she's one of those grammar Natzis in the world, but when it comes to math, don't go any higher than algebra!" I chuckled. "But I love her..."
I trailed off. "Something wro
Numb chapter 3I ran out, tearing for my room. As I flung open the door, I sighed with relief as I saw Cadence still sitting on the desk. I hurried over to her.
"Melody, are you alright?" she asked.
"Why didn't you tell me you were wanted??" I burst out. Cadence's ears drooped.
"I..I didn't want you to turn me over to them," she said quietly. "I'm sorry."
I picked her up. "Cadence, I don't betray my friends," I promised her. "There's no way I'd do anything to hurt you!"
I hugged her, and I felt her relax. After a moment, I felt the soft rise and fall of her small chest as she slept. I lay her down on my bed and set the blanket over her, smiling.
Anyone tries to mess with you, Cadence, I thought, and they're gonna have to go through me!
I must've dozed off as well, because suddenly I was being shaken awake. "What - what is it?" I asked, startled.
Sergeant Hower stared down at me. "Your entrance class. Let's go, missy."
Cadence safely tucked into a large pocket of my new military outf
Numb chapter 2"Here's your room," Mr. E. said as he pulled open a small door. I stepped inside, and my gaze flew around the room. It was small, had a single bed, a desk, a chair, and a lamp.
"I-I'm not a prisoner or anything..a-am I?" I asked nervously. Mr. E. smiled at me.
"Of course not. Now please, get a bit of rest. That fit must have worn you out."
I nodded silently in agreement, dropping my bag on the floor. Mr. E. left, closing the door behind him, and I set the Emolga on the desk.
"Hey there," I said. "My name's Melody."
I didn't expect it to answer, but...it did.
"Hi Melody. I'm Cadence the Emolga," it said cheerfully, its female voice soft and kind. I scrambled back, and the chair fell to the floor, with me in it. 'Cadence' peered over the edge of the desk. "Are you okay?"
Rubbing my head, I muttered, "Just frikkin' fine..." Getting to my feet, I pulled the chair back up and retrieved Raggedy Ann. This time, I sat on the bed. "So...uh....Cadence...you're an Emolga."
Numb chapter 1"Momma, I'm heading inside okay?" I called as I shut the car door. I rushed inside the church, thoughts reeling - If I timed things right, I could use the hour before Chamber Choir to really work on my story, and maybe talk to Kierwyn a bit too.
My name's Melody - I'm 14 and homeschooled. You know when I'm around 'cause I'm like, ultra hyper-crazy. Well, around my friends - on my own I'm pretty shy. So I stay home a lot, on my computer. Facebook is a wondrous thing. Anyway, it's Monday - band classes. Where I met Kierwyn and about half of my other friends. Enough already - I'm heading in.
I dropped my bag onto a table and looked around the auditorium, just to check around for any of my friends. Of course, only Maddie was there. I waved at her and sat down.
The first 45 minutes went by slowly, and then I heard behind me, "Hey Mel." I turned and smiled at the brown haired girl.
She sat down and started talking about her newest deck for some character and I absently answere
